Dissociation Constant in Nitrogen Fixation by Azotobacter

چکیده
6 Dodge originally used "A" and "a" to designate the two sex types in Neurospora crassa. Lindegren later substituted the symbols "+" and "-" for these. Because of the desirability of using the symbol + for the normal allele of a gene and also to designate a positive experimental result, we prefer Dodge's original designations. 4 Neither conversion of pimelic acid to p-aminobenzoic acid by the normal strain nor anti-sulfanilamide activity of pimelic acid could be detected. 7 See Woods, D., and Fildes, P., Chem. Nat., 75, 107 (1941), and loc. cit., footnote 3. 11 All the compounds tested were carefully purified to remove any possible traces of paminobenzoic acid. The aniline was prepared by hydrolysis of recrystallized acetanilide and subsequent distillation. 12 A bacteriostatic action of p-nitrobenzoic acid has been reported. See King, J. T., and Henschel, A. F., Proc. Soc. Exp. Biol. Med., 47, 400 (1941). 1" The other active compounds were toxic in concentrations theoretically high enough to overcome the sulfanilamide inhibition.

Azotobacter : A Plant Growth - Promoting Rhizobacteria Used as Biofertilizer
Nitrogen fixation is mainly responsible for improvement of crop yield. In this regard, diazotrophs like Rhizobium, Azotobacter and Azospirillum are important as they enrich nitrogen nutrition in N-deficient soils. Of these, Azotobacter promotes plant growth as well as nitrogen fixation. Thus technology has been developed for making use of Azotobacter biofertilizer for nitrogen and non-nitrogen ...
متن کاملThe amino-terminal GAF domain of Azotobacter vinelandii NifA binds 2-oxoglutarate to resist inhibition by NifL under nitrogen-limiting conditions.
The expression of genes required for the synthesis of molybdenum nitrogenase in Azotobacter vinelandii is controlled by the NifL-NifA transcriptional regulatory complex in response to nitrogen, carbon, and redox status. Activation of nif gene expression by the transcriptional activator NifA is inhibited by direct protein-protein interaction with NifL under conditions unfavorable for nitrogen fi...
متن کامل93. Mechanism of Biological Nitrogen Fixation
A PREVIOuS report [Wyss & Wilson, 1941] demonstrated that B2 inhibits fixation of N2 by Azotobacter. Because of the apparent uniqueness of this type of inhibition, such a demonstration furnishes strong evidence that in the symbiotic and free-living N2 fixation processes the mechanism of fixation is very similar if not identical. Further studies described in this paper provide additional support...
متن کاملRespiratory Protection of Nitrogenase Activity in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Azotobacter vinelandii</Emphasis>Roles of the Terminal Oxidases
Nitrogen fixation by aerobic prokaryotes appears paradoxical: the nitrogen-fixing enzymes— nitrogenases—are notoriously oxygen-labile, yet many bacteria fix nitrogen aerobically. This review summarises the evidence that cytochrome bd, a terminal oxidase unrelated to the mitochondrial and many other bacterial oxidases, plays a crucial role in aerotolerant nitrogen fixation in Azotobacter vinelan...
متن کاملThe Utilization of Nitrogen in Hydroxylamine and Oximes by Azotobacter vinelandii.
Recent studies have provided several types of evidence supporting the view that ammonia is the key intermediate in nitrogen fixation by Azotobacter. An alternative hypothesis based on hydroxylamine depends almost entirely on the detection of traces of oximes in cultures fixing nitrogen. Although the two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive (Burris and Wilson, 1945), hydroxylamine remains an im...

Azotobacter vinelandii cysts undergo conversion to vegetative cells in Burk's nitrogen-free medium utilizing glucose, sucrose, or acetate. In 1% glucose, this overall process was complete in 8 hr and consisted of a germination and an outgrowth phase. Respiration, ribonucleic acid, and protein synthesis began soon after the addition of the germinant, and these processes proceeded at rates charac...
